Rapid Urbanisation, A boon or a bane?
Hello everyone! Today I am going to talk about a topic that causes some problems for us. Right outside my society there is construction of metro happening. The Gurugram metro rail project is a 28.5-kilometer elevated corridor connecting Old Gurugram and New Gurugram. Urbanisation is becoming widespread and the big question is that whether rapid, unplanned and unchecked urbanisation can become a bane for the society. Now see metros can connect people city to city but it also brings its share of problems.
Though I agree that building a metro has a positive side too... constructing a metro brings many negative consequences... Here are some of them...
Constructing tracks, stations often requires cutting down a lot of trees and clearing green spaces, which destroys a lot of wildlife habitats.• Gurugram was once a lush woodland and native natural forest ecosystem, before decades of mining, urban expansion, and deforestation happened?
Replacing Soil and grass with concrete surfaces prevents rainwater from absorbing into the ground. This worsens the flooding situation and increases the heat.
Manufacturing the required material alongside bringing heavy machinery releases massive amounts of carbon dioxide in the air which causes air pollution.
Places like Subhash Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, and the Old Delhi Road are seeing severe lane reductions. Heavy machinery and barricades have caused a lot of traffic. Also right outside greenwood city sector 45 on Netaji Subhash Marg and Vikas Marg, the central median is heavily barricaded for foundation drilling.
And on top of that Traffic is not being managed; people who want to reach their schools, offices etc. on time are facing difficulties.

In conclusion, rapid, unchecked, unplanned urbanisation is not good for the environment. Advanced planning is the need of the hour.
